Human beings fall into the category of animals. Thus, I will keep this as generic as I possibly can. I'll also disclose that I believe in "Intelligent Design." That way you can make an informed choice as to whether you want to read the rest of the article or not.
I do not discount evolution entirely. Evolution undoubtedly happens. Where I disagree is the source. I'm not entirely sure where "evolutionists" claim it all started. I'm confused by the many different and often contradictory theories. I do realize that some theories are mutually exclusive to others; in science, this is perfectly acceptable. I don't offer that these contradictions invalidate evolution on the whole. They're different perspectives on data we don't have. It's all conjecture because none of us was there when it started.
I understand there is evidence that leads to these various conclusions, but interpretation of that evidence is no less subjective than one's interpretation of God. So, what I offer here is my subjective, and biased position on evolution and why it can never work for me.
What does the title of this article mean? Well, if you really want to accept evolution as the explanation for where everything came from, then the only explanation is symbiosis. You'll notice a paragraph at the end of the Wikipedia article that mentions how creationists use obligate symbiosis as evidence that evolution is false -- I don't agree with those creationists. For those that are too lazy to click the link: Symbiosis is a mutually beneficial relationship between organisms. Obligate symbiosis is a mutually beneficial relationship between organisms where the complete absence of one or the other organisms results in the demise of one (or both). That's as much as I'm going to explain; read the Wikipedia article.
Back to the title of the article. Since everything started from single celled organisms, we all have a common ancestry (you racist folks have a lot to think about). There are at least three possible scenarios that led to the population of the earth. First, some spark initiated life, and one single-celled organism was born; that one cell began to divide. Second, life started in several places by the repetition of that spark in many different areas of the planet. Third, God put us here.
Obviously the third is the most believable to me. However, of the other two, the first is the most plausible. Why is that? Well, the complexity of a single-celled organism is a lot more vast than it's name suggests. While it is a single cell, what makes it "alive" and able to reproduce is a very, very complicated process involving DNA, RNA, and a host of other mechanisms. It's hard enough to believe that, against infinite odds, the proteins organized themselves into that cell without suggesting that the same process happened over and over again in different areas. It's impossible. A scientist would correct me and say, "No, it's improbable; not impossible." Yeah, don't jerk my chain.
Regardless of whether it was the first or second scenario, at some point (through mutation, or through the spontaneous appearance of many organisms) these cells were moving around together. As they began to mutate they took on different behaviors. In time, some of these activities were beneficial to other cells. The multi-celled organism was born. And my claim is that in order for these cells to survive they had to organize and become many cells working together. Never mind that this defies logic, since single-celled organisms were here before us, and will be here long after us. They don't need to organize. But, since this is all theoretical (and biased!) we'll assume there was a need for cells to create a buddy system.
These multi-celled organisms were doing pretty well but they lived rather randomly. So, by another chance occurrence a brain cell happened to form. Thus, the organism was truly organized by another cell (or group of cells). This further supports that all of these pieces came together due to the mutual benefits. With a brain, it could hunt, rather than just happen upon food. Let this process go over billions of years; BAM! A human!
If you accept evolution (and only evolution) as the explanation for our existence, then you must accept that you are not really a sentient being. Your brain has a symbiotic relationship with every other organ in your body. Your blood cells need your lung cells. All of your cells need the white blood cells. The white blood cells need the red blood cells. Your brain is the supreme being of them all. It is organized in such a way that it keeps almost all of these systems working together.
Wait...that's actually not true. Your kidneys don't require any input from your brain. They just do what they do. Your liver is the same way. It's activity is triggered by it's own "sensors" into your digestive tract. All of your parts require the other parts. Internally, you're a miracle of obligate symbiosis.
You are the ultimate example of symbiosis. Aren't you?
How did you become self-aware? How is it that unlike any other animal you understand the beginning of your life, and you know it will end? Are you really that simple?
Anyway, I won't preach here. This is just something to think about. If you liked this article you can email me. Remove the ones (1) from the email address to get at my real address. Last time I asked for feedback, I got some really hateful people... Let's see how it goes this time.
